luo-yang-xie-yue-from-the-series-girls-2008-2016The Willow School is excited to host Danish photographer and curator Sarah Høilund’s Photographing the Female from July 18-25. Showcasing photographers from 16 different countries, her vision brings together a global exhibition that explores female identity and representation through the lens of contemporary photography.

Each artist’s photographic practice explores a unique, contemporary female experience, often while engaging with historically central themes such as the body, sense of self, conformity, and stigmatization. This group of international photographers speaks to us from a myriad of vantage points, uncovering social and personal realities that challenge perceptions of what it means to be female, inviting the viewer to consider the consequences of society’s prescribed roles.

Photographing the Female is as much a meditation on medium as it is on subject. As an extension of human memory, photography is a way of visually archiving the stories we deem important. Photographs help us reflect on, identify, and ultimately understand our collective and individual selves. This exhibit contemplates the role of photography in our contemporary world of images and emphasizes the need to bring female narratives to the forefront of our social storytelling.
