On October 29, The Willow School hosted its first Teal Pumpkin Party, inspired by the Food Allergy Research & Education Network’s national Teal Pumpkin Project. Thanks to donations made at the door and more, Willow donated $1000 to FARE!

FARE works on behalf of the 15 million Americans with food allergies, including all those at risk for life-threatening anaphylaxis. This potentially deadly disease affects 1 in every 13 children in the U.S. – or roughly two in every classroom. FARE’s mission is to improve the quality of life and the health of individuals with food allergies, and to provide them hope through the promise of new treatments.

The Willow School has embraced a nut-free, allergy- and health-conscious approach almost since it was founded in 2000.

“Our Teal Pumpkin Halloween Party was the perfect extension of Willow’s commitment to creating an inclusive environment for all children, particularly those with severe food allergies,” said Jerry Loewen, Willow’s Head of School. “Our nut-free policy draws a number of students to our school, and our lunch program considers all manner of food sensitivities, including gluten-free, diary-free, and vegetarian options. This event also allowed our community to demonstrate the virtues we teach our students, such as respect and empathy.”

It was a fun event for everyone who attended, including many kids without allergies. There was trick-or-treating for treasures instead of candy at classroom doors, slime-making, face-painting, pumpkin ring toss, spooky stories, scarecrow decorating, and so much more! Thanks to all of the volunteers who made this event a success. We look forward to doing it again next year!
