Service Learning
Service learning at Willow means tackling real world problems in the community in ways that help students grow intellectually, social-emotionally, and ethically. All of our service projects are meaningful because they are integrated into the academic and virtues curricula.
In first grade, service learning is connected to the yearlong study of community and examined through the virtue of Gratitude. As part of their study, students visit businesses and organizations in the area, as well as the non-profit organization Homeless Solutions, Inc., to explore an essential question: What are the roles and responsibilities of community members to those in need? The end-of-year project, Community in the Woods, showcases their learning and also serves as a fundraiser for Homeless Solutions.
Middle School Service Committees
Service learning develops as students move into Middle School. Here they take on greater responsibility in service of the school community through Middle School Service Committees. The goal is to foster students’ sense of leadership, deepen their understanding of the process for effecting change, and build the practical skills to accomplish it. Committees meet once a week and are guided by a faculty sponsor.
